CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

Why Meaningful Membership Matters

At Calvary Baptist Church, we believe that church membership matters.

Jesus did not save us to live the Christian life alone. He calls us into a community of believers where we worship together, encourage one another, bear one another’s burdens, serve one another, and grow together as disciples of Jesus. The Christian life is deeply personal, but it was never meant to be lived in isolation.

That is why we encourage every believer who regularly attends CBC to consider taking the next step of becoming a member.

Membership is a meaningful commitment to a particular local church. It is more than attending Sunday services or enjoying the preaching and fellowship. Membership says, “These are my brothers & sisters, and I am committed to loving, serving, encouraging, and walking with them as we follow Jesus together.”

Why become a member?

1. Because God designed you for community.
Throughout Scripture, Christians are described as members of one body. We need one another. God grows us through the encouragement, correction, care, friendship, and service we experience within the local church.

2. Because discipleship is not just about you.
Following Jesus means learning to love others. Membership gives you a particular community in which you can put the gospel into practice—serving, encouraging, praying for, forgiving, bearing burdens, and using your gifts for the good of others.

3. Because you need to be shepherded.
God has given elders the responsibility of caring for the souls entrusted to them, and he calls Christians to willingly receive that care. Membership provides a clear and intentional relationship between the church and those who shepherd it, as well as a commitment to walk together through the joys and challenges of life.

4. Because membership reflects the gospel.
Jesus did not merely express love for his people from a distance. He gladly gave himself for his people. In the same way, membership calls us to move beyond casual connection toward sacrificial love and service for a particular people.

Membership is therefore both a commitment and a blessing. It helps us grow as disciples of Jesus, gives us a tangible way to love and serve others, and displays something beautiful about the gospel to a watching world.

We’re glad when people visit CBC. We hope you’ll be encouraged by God’s Word, the singing of his people, and the fellowship of the church. But we also want to invite you into something deeper: meaningful membership in a local church where we can follow Jesus together.

How Do I Join?

If you’re ready to take the next step toward membership at CBC, here’s what the process looks like:

1. Attend Regularly
Come worship with us regularly. Get to know our church family, become familiar with our vision, and ask questions along the way.

2. Affirm Our Doctrine and Church Covenant
Membership means agreeing with what we believe (affirmation of faith) and committing to live together according to our church covenant.

3. Complete a Membership Application Form
This gives us an opportunity to hear more about your testimony, your faith in Christ, and your desire to become part of CBC.

4. Meet with the Elders
You’ll have an opportunity to sit down with two of our elders, share your story, and talk through what membership at CBC means.

5. Be Welcomed as a Member of CBC
Upon the recommendation of the elders, you’ll be baptized by immersion (if you haven’t been already), and formally welcomed into our church family as we commit together to help one another follow Jesus faithfully.
